Plougastel is the national birthplace of France's most beloved fruit: the strawberry. This charming corner of the Brest harbor still cultivates this marvel of sweet, fragrant fruit. Imported from Chile in the 17th century, the white strawberry first flourished in Plougastel. Numerous crossbreedings were necessary to arrive at the modern strawberry. The first crossbreeding was with a North American strawberry plant, resulting in bicolored fruit. Then, a new cross with a German variety, and finally, crossbreeding with small wild strawberries, led to the strawberries' distinctive red color.
As a producer of artisanal jam, Muroise et Compagnie works every day to offer you the very best fruit, the finest artisanal jam: the Plougastel strawberries are cooked in a large copper cauldron with brown cane sugar, and each jar is hand-filled, just like homemade jams!
